ART / EXPRESSION / EXPERIENCE

It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing..

DAVID HUNTER
ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Landscape Series

Somehow it always comes back to landscape for me. I get ideas about combinations of colours and certain light effects from what I see in the world. Then the form comes – as familiar scenes, local walks, buildings and so on – and sometimes quite imaginary landscapes. This means that the land can be blue or red, and the sky a pale violet. It’s what it feels like – not just what the eye reports.

Working in oil paint gives me the widest range of textures and luminous effects of any medium – from thick brushstrokes to smooth, transparent glazes. Painting to me is definitely not relaxing – it is involving! I suppose it is my way of creating a connection with nature, yet rarely exactly representing her. The painting frequently seems to complete itself – me sitting in front of it now and then.

Abstract Series 2006-2007

My current work, while still based in landscape, is concerned with biomorphic forms and gesture. These forms developed from figurative sketches (life drawing) into more gesture than figure. This appeared to me what I imagine spirits to resemble. The forms, or spirits, begin to dance.

Working with a limited palette and glazing in oil paint, the landscape has essentially disappeared, suggested largely by the panoramic shape of the canvas. The translucent shapes and colours give an impression of movement, which changes in varying light conditions, and position of the viewer.
