…the process of painting is like a
dialog. It starts with a question, an inspiration coming
from observable reality.

Artist’s Statement
This body of work is a tribute to
architecture as a metaphor for human achievement.
The paintings are designed to evoke thoughtfullness and
consideration of the thought process. The process of visualizing
an idea and bringing that idea into reality, as an architect
visualizes a building and in collaboration with others, brings
it into reality.
Inspired by walks through Toronto and New York and working from
photographs I have taken, documenting the grandeur of the
architecture; my work makes strong references to photographic
processes. The images are contained within a border, as in a
snapshot, and I paint the negative space over a ground of metal
leaf, leaving the positive space to reflect light back to the
viewer, as does a camera.
This engages the viewer’s participation in the work as the
surface reflection may vary depending upon the point of view of
the observer.
The large scale of the works, the dramatic perspective and the
human viewpoint is intended to encourage this collaboration with
the artist, in celebration and tribute to the architect’s
achievement.
