Biography

Leanne Davies was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1993, she moved to Toronto to take a BFA in painting and interdisciplinary studio at York University. At the same time, she began gigging as a drummer/songwriter for several (completely obscure) bands in Toronto’s vibrant indie-rock scene. After completing her BFA in 1996, Leanne (like many of her fellow art school grads) combined her musical pursuits with a paying job as a new media project manager during the tech boom of the late ‘90s.

In the spring of 2005, Leanne (now a mother of two) joined with several of her neighbours to form a residents’ group in the area around Vaughan Road & Oakwood Avenue in the old City of York. This marked the point at which she decided to renew her dedication to both her artwork and to her new community. While focusing on her painting and her young family, she continues to use community-based arts as a tool to revitalize her neighbourhood.
